I wanted to include a great recipe for Cinnamon Buns as part of the cooking for kids series. My kids love waking up on the weekend and making breakfast for the family. They are craving something homemade and hot after eating cold cereal during the week.
Our favorite weekend breakfast choices would have to be hot, gooey Cinnamon Buns. This recipe is simple and quick which fits perfect for me when choosing recipes for my kids to use. I wanted a recipe that didn’t include yeast as that can get tricky for kids. The list of ingredients are basic and inexpensive. I also included a trick for using dental floss to cut the rolls perfect every time. It’s a safe and simple trick for kids to use .
Simple Cinnamon Buns
Ingredients:
- 2/3 cup brown sugar

Cinnamon Buns
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
- 3/4 cup milk
Directions:
1. Set the oven at 375 degrees. Butter a 9-inch-square cake pan.
2. In a small bowl combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and butter; set aside.
3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar. With a spoon, stir in the butter and milk and mix for 1 minute or just until it forms a smooth dough.
4. Turn the dough out onto a floured counter and roll it into a rectangle about 9 by 16 inches.
5. Spread the mixture from step 2 above on the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edge. With your hands, gently roll up the dough, starting at one long side. At the end of the roll, press the seam to seal the roll.
6. Using a clean piece of dental floss, hold one end in each hand and slide under the dough roll. Hold both ends of the floss up then cross them through the log until that piece is separated. Continue until you have 12 equal pieces. Arrange the pieces evenly in the cake pan.
7. Bake the rolls for about 25 minutes or until firm and golden.
Now let’s not forget the icing, that is the best part.
Cinnamon Roll Icing
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted into a bowl
1. Use a whisk to stir the milk into the powdered sugar.
2. Let the rolls cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Turn them out onto a large cake plate, setting them right side up.
3. With a spoon, drizzle the icing evenly over the rolls
